About the Author
Bill James made his mark in the 1970s and 1980s with his Baseball Abstracts. He has been tearing down preconceived notions about America’s national pastime ever since. He is currently the Senior Advisor on Baseball Operations for the Boston Red Sox, as well as the author of The Man from the Train. James lives in Lawrence, Kansas, with his wife, Susan McCarthy, and three children.Rachel McCarthy James lives in Lawrence, KS with her husband Jason. She studied creative writing at Hollins University, and her work has previously been featured in publications including Bitch, Broadly, and The New Inquiry. The Man from the Train is her first book.

As a former cold case detective I rarely read books like this as it is like taking your work home... But this book caught my eye and I decided to give it a shot. The authors do their research well. They have studied their subject and, I believe, they have come as close as possible to solving this mystery. I agree with about 90-95% of their conclusions which are well thought out. The book bounces around in timeframe but it is justified to give the reader the proper framework. It is no easy task to go back and look at a crime 100 plus years later and to try and solve it. Especially when everyone involved is long gone. Did the authors solve this case at the end ? Probably. It reads strong....All of that said, I enjoyed this book immensely, and recommend it to folks who are into that genre.
I truly wanted to like this book, and admit that I did finish it and thought some of the author's theories were interesting.Unfortunately this book seriously needed editing and didn't get it. My guess is that the publisher was in such a rush to get it out, that they did very little (which is appalling because it would have made this a much stronger book).My issues are with the style, which is inconsistent throughout; the arrogant insults to the reader ('if you think nothing ever happens in a small town - then you are an ignorant a&%$# too' aside in particular); the complete lack of any maps (he keeps telling the reader to find a map and put pins in it to connect the dots to prove he's right); and the non-linear timeline of the crimes (which make the book irritating and confusing).There is another book, published earlier, that discusses the Man on the Train theory (and imho is a much better book on the subject) and the author refers to it - but seems to imply that his theory of a transient killer is unique. It isn't - as police back in the day had this theory also. Instead of using proper deduction, he uses amateur opinion. His reveal of who he thinks the killer is, was interesting, but a real stretch with the author coloring in what he thinks might possibly be facts. Very disappointing
Bill James is my idol, if I could seriously have one. Although I hate where baseball managers and GMs have taken this stuff as much as I hate where evangelists have taken the Bible, Bill James has been responsible for my career in baseball statistics. When he admitted his love of true crime I was staggered, it being my secret vice. Popular Crime was terrific.... Bill James focussing his eagle eye on some of my favorite crimes. Great! But James' forte is the persuasive essay. I would not want to get into an argument with this man, whether on Lizzie Borden or the Yankees. But this book is not an essay, it's long-form narrative, and he just can't make a story take off. A hundred and fifty pages in you've got to make it fly. One chapter after another drearily outlines the crime scene and checks it against the previous chapter. Yup. That's the guy. A boring axe murderer story? You've got to establish a sense of dread, take a different viewpoint, something. I don't care about an axe murderer from 1909. Make me care! Nice that you can flip through Lexis/Nexus and find detail matches in mass murders, but I want a story!I want to make it clear that I love Bill James and if I ever meet him in a social situation I will not bring this up.
A+ for the research, analysis, and conclusions. However, this strongly needed considerable editing. While I understand the basis for starting with the more recent crimes that even contemporaneous authorities believed were probably connected, the chrono was disjointed and repetitive. A good editor should have completely restructured this. There's also at least two entirely wasted chapters on the misdirected Villisca investigation that did not advance the mystery of our serial killer, and were frankly boring.However, the premise is fascinating, and clearly a lot of work was done. The identification of the killer is highly plausible. The arguments for linking the murders were well-presented. It's fascinating history, of which I was unaware. Definitely worth reading. Rated more highly than the writing/editing otherwise merits because of the strong detective work.
A painstaking comparison of murders of families in the early twentieth century. A different world with much less police sophistication and available resources. Whether or not you agree with their conclusion, and I tend to, they have made a compelling story here. The also include the "Axeman" murders of New Orleans about which I had read a separate book,, but I will leave this to readers as I won't do a spoiler here. Highly recommended.
I was so excited to read the book. Unfortunately, I became disenchanted, more from the style of the book, than the subject.The Man from the Train, is a definite contender in the solution to these murders. It was difficult for me to finish, due to constantly being told, a topic will be revisited in a future chapter. Also if the author would have supplied maps and pictures, it would have been more to follow. Instead he tells the reader to procure maps themselves, to see how the killer travelled to each crime scene. The publisher should have known it would be better to apply them.I made it to the end, but the journey wasn't as enjoyable, as I had hoped.
