Amazon.com Review

No education is complete without a large slice of Greek mythology. And there's no better way of meeting that literary quota than with the D'Aulaires' book. All the great gods and goddesses of ancient Greece are depicted in this big, beautiful classic, lovingly illustrated and skillfully told. Young readers will be dazzled by mighty Zeus, lord of the universe; stirred by elegant Athena, goddess of wisdom; intimidated by powerful Hera, queen of Olympus; and chilled by moody Poseidon, ruler of the sea. These often impetuous immortals flounce and frolic, get indiscreet, and get even. From petty squabbles to heroic deeds, their actions cover the range of godly--and mortal--personalities. The D'Aulaires' illustrations have a memorable quality: once pored over, they will never leave the minds of the viewer. Decades later, the name Gaea will still evoke the soft green picture of lovely Mother Earth, her body hills and valleys and her eyes blue lakes reflecting the stars of her husband, Uranus the sky. No child is too young to appreciate the myths that have built the foundation for much of the world's art and literature over the centuries. This introduction to mythology is a treasure. (Ages 10 to adult) --Emilie Coulter

This was one of my favorite books as a child but after a few moves, I lost my copy. I found this and ordered it to share with my daughter, to teach her a bit about her Greek heritage. It is exactly as I remembered it- the colorful pictures and intriguing stories about the gods and goddesses of ancient Greece still captivate me. My daughter is 5, so the wording it a bit plain for her but she enjoys the beautiful pictures and asks lots of questions about each deity. I wouldn't call this an educational book but it was a big part of my Greek identity growing up and I like sharing that with my daughter, even if we're not Greek Orthodox.I just think it's an interesting subject and this is one of the best books I've found regarding Greek myth. Might be better for an older child, maybe 8 or 9, but it's a straightforward read and wonderfully illustrated.Highly recommend and happy with the price, as I've had trouble finding it elsewhere. It arrived quickly and in perfect condition!

I ordered this years ago for my first child. 7 years later, we ordered another one. This is a good version of the Greek myths, with good printing and plenty of illustrations. The Greek myths are integral to so much literature and films - children need a good foundation for future reading and this book gives that.I recommend this book without reservation.

One of my 8-yr old favorite books. Will keep her entertained for many hours as she devours the myths and legends. She cannot wait to tell me about the different gods, goddesses, and mythical creatures described in the stories. The accompanying drawings are suitable for young children. This book is also a perfect birthday gift for kids 7-10 to encourage them to read. I am now getting multiple copies to hand out as birthday gifts.

A classic book on classic Greek mythology. I remember pouring over this book again and again when I was a kid and now, decades later, my kid is enjoying it too. It was the origin of my own ongoing fondness for Greek lore in general, and as I grew older, I recognized how relevant its contents remained, whether it be related to the days of the week, the names of planets and constellations, or the rich observations it makes of human nature and psychology. The book offers rich insight as to how ancient civilizations interpreted the world around them. I recommend this book as a primer for parents wanting to impart to their children a crucial aspect of Western civilization, so much of which remains with us to this day.

One of the best books for young children ever. This amazing book covers many of the most widely known Greek myths, but many lesser known stories too. It contains a mix of beautiful drawings that are both comic and sophisticated. The text is clear yet lyrical, while remaining easily understandable to young children. I can't tell you how many perfectly beautiful Saturdays I spent up in my room reading this engrossing book instead of riding my bike or playing games with other kids. And I don't regret it at all. Recently I was asked to give a parent a book recommendation for their 7-year-old child. Not only did I buy them this book, but I bought one for myself and relived the joy it gave me all over again.

I purchased this as an end-of-year award for a high achieving student. I have a classics degree and teach Latin and mythology to middle schoolers. This book remains my favorite to read aloud and share with sixth grade students. They love the illustrations and storytelling. I would absolutely recommend it to any older elementary or middle school student who loves a great tale!

Love the book. Arrived quickly, in excellent condition. My husband was given a copy of this book by a teacher when he was a kid and he was excited to acquire a copy for our son, who is old enough tonstart reading at this level. For my husband's sake, I wish I had purchased a hardback version, but this one is sturdy and my son and husband have been enjoying this book together.

My 5 and 1/2 year old is obsessed with Greek myths. I bought this on the recommendation of a parent with a similarly aged kid, and she's right - my daughter is enthralled! Daulaire's starts at the beginning, with the Greek creation myths and moves forward from there in logical sequence. The retellings are simplified but not simplistic, which is a step up from many other junior myth books. There's still some poetry to the language, and plenty of vividness and details. The illustrations are not the most sophisticated, but are interesting, and my kid pores over them. As well as being suitable for reading outloud, Daulaire's would keep kids who can read happy, probably up until about 8-10, depending on the sophistication of their reading and their hunger for mythology (they would be ready to move onto more classic retellings by then). I thoroughly recommend this book.
