I got this book as a gift for my 5 month old son for his first Deepavali. Even though, he can't read, I made an activity for all my nephews and nieces for the party. The book is a really short read. It covers basics such as what it stands for, why we celebrate it and how we celebrate it. I wish it would talk a little more about some things related to Deepavali like Rangoli drawings, and how different parts of India celebrate Deepavali and MOST IMPORTANTLY- its DEEPAVALI and not DIWALI!
I didn’t like that they talk about demons etc. it was too religious and complicated for a young group of three year olds.
I purchased this book because our daughter married a young man from India whose family celebrates Diwali. This festival is as important to his family as Christmas is to ours. I wanted a simple, basic understanding of the celebration and so purchased this book. My son-in-law read it and pointed out some errors in fact in the Southern India tradition explained in the book.
Being a 1st Generation American Desi, I treasure the moments when I can enrich my daughter's life with both of her cultures. This book is great introduction to those that are curious and to those that would liked to introduce India's and Hindu's most treasured celebration.
This was a great book to read about Diwali during our Holidays Around the World unit in first grade. I'm so glad I bought it to read to my class.
This book gave me a clear and simple way to explain Diwali to my preschool age children. I am planning on purchasing this for all of my nieces and nephews. Really thrilled with this purchase.
This book is a great intro to Diwali for a child with Indian heritage living abroad. My daughter is half Indian and really is not exposed to the culture on a regular basis. She loves reading this book, though, to learn more about how her grandparents and aunts and uncles celebrate Diwali! :) It was a great addition to her library! Very thorough and informative book without being boring or providing too much detail for young children!
We've been reading to our now 7 month-old since she was a week old, and this book was way too short, and lacking any sort of depth at all. As a practicing Hindu, it was also a completely glossed over version of Diwali, with no coverage of the actual religious meaning of it! Very disappointed. A wonderful alternative is "Rama and the Demon King" - wonderfully illustrated, and captures the depth of the religious and moral parts of the story, while not being too long for a young one to handle.
