Review
"This new book by Traer Scott is a delightful collection of wildlife portraiture. It is jam-packed with colour photographs of 25 types of birds, from owls to bald eagles, vultures to kites. Through Scott's lens, the birds in Raptors emerge as personalities and not just species; from the wise and quizzical to the fiercely self-possessed and the flighty. The perfect book for the twitchers among us." - Daily Mail (UK)"[Raptors] is devoted to dramatic portraits of birds that many of us rarely get to see in the wild, and almost never up close..During her time working on the book, she encountered bald eagles, vultures, owls, falcons, and other birds of prey, taking studio portraits of them that highlight their every feather." - Mental Floss"[A] gorgeous, fascinating collection of birds - to inform and help identify 25 different species of hawks, owls, falcons, a bald eagle, kestrels, a Mississippi kite, a turkey vulture, and more.Through the author's lens the raptors she introduces emerge as personalities, not just types: wise, mysterious, and fiercely confident. It's impossible not to be in awe of the their intensity and challenges to thrive in our complicated environment." - Action Line"Traer Scott's ninth photographic book comprises 70 colour portraits of 25 bird of prey species. Shot close-up in her studio against plain backdrops, her images show the birds in great detail and encourage us to marvel at the variety of shapes and sizes in these intensely watchful, aerodynamic creatures." - Royal Photography Society Journal"A collection of intimate portraits evidencing the enigmatic birds' majesty, feral wisdom, grace, and primordial authority..Unlike most of Scott's books, Raptors doesn't come with an overt call to action. But its 70 color photos present 25 different species, both exotic and familiar-many of which are endangered, and Scott's accompanying text highlights the specific threats faced by each. 'Whenever I work with animals, my primary goal is to make people appreciate not only their beauty, but also their amazing feats of adaptation-because really, any species still on this planet represents an incredible evolutionary miracle." - Sierra"Raptors: Portraits of Birds of Prey" by Traer Scott, a wildlife photographer whose pleasure in, and enthusiasm for, her subjects echoes throughout her delightful foreword and exquisite close-up color shots, made at several wildlife centers." - Virginan-Pilot (Norfolk, VA)"Raptors: Portraits of Birds of Prey is filled with remarkable images of birds that against all expectations were photographed in the studio rather than in the wild. The result of photographing in the studio is a much more intimate portrayal of birds that are uniquely intelligent, fierce, and graceful. Traer Scott photographed hawks, falcons, eagles, owls, vultures, and many other birds, each raptor displaying their own penchant for a pose that exemplifies their species. And her wonderfully lucid and articulate introduction, full of anecdotes and useful information, enhances our knowledge of raptors and birds in general, and is a pleasure to read." - New York Journal of Books"Informative text entries accompany each of the 28 raptor species that are profiled, but it is Scott's 70 crystal-clear images of the hawks, eagles, falcons and owls that you will get lost in." - London Free Press (Canada)"In her own inimitable style, animal photographer Traer Scott shows us 25 of the most enigmatic, powerful and graceful raptors in this set of vivid colour photographs..Dramatic, intimate, amusing or beautiful, each image reflects the photographer's skill in capturing the character of her subjects." - Outdoor Photography

While this book does not cover all raptors of the world (mainly in North America I believe) it's still definitely worth a read. Fantastic and beautiful shots with simple descriptions that don't take away from the photographs themselves. It's just enough. Highly recommend!
Breathtaking photos! Printed on quality paper.
FABULOUS PHOTOS! This is a great book for even kids who loved these big beautiful birds.
Traer's photography is simply stunning. She focuses on a topic and captures wonderful shots coupled with informative and entertaining vignettes. Being a dog fan, I have Shelter Dogs (2006) and Newborn Puppies (2013). But when I heard about Raptors, I pre-ordered the book because I really enjoy birds of prey and knew that Traer would do them justice. And she didn't disappoint! I know photographers go through a lot of work to capture the right images, and I can only imagine how working with birds of prey compares with dogs, farm animals, and Traer's other subjects. The sample images on Amazon are representative of what you can discover and experience between the book's covers. Some of my favorites from the book include the Mississippi Kite, the Saker Falcon, the Eastern Screetch-Owl, the Northern Saw-Whet Owl, the Kestrel, and of course my all-time favorite bird, the Peregrine Falcon. And the Crested Caracara is a hoot! So many birds I've never heard of, and so glad to have a wonderfully presented representation of these great creatures in one place.
What a beautiful look into the eyes of some of the most dramatic birds in the world. Scott photographs a selection of owls and hawks from several continents. All of her subjects are captive, "rehab birds" that could not be returned to the wild, but this fact should not deter birders and naturalists in search of spectacularly detailed images of creatures we usually see only at a distance and on the wing. The book will be even more welcome to lovers of fine photography, though. Scott's sense of composition is... wow, and her choice of starkly featureless backgrounds only adds to the drama. A highly recommended book for anyone interested in these birds and a new way to look at them.
Scott's photography is excellent, and some of the photos in this book are superb. The text is not particularly helpful save for the portion where she describes what she was trying to accomplish. This is an art photography book, not a nature book. Scott plainly respects the birds she photographs, but there's no apparent organization to the book. The birds are not in the wild. They live in rescue centers, for the most part, some returned to nature. Most are American species, but a few others are thrown in,with what seems randomness. That said, the book is worth viewing. The images show both empathy and skill. I was taken by the photos of a Black vulture chick.
Traer's photographs are truly stunning. In a world where so many species-focused books show the animals in portraiture only, Traer has managed to capture movement with a number of the subjects featured. What I find most amazing is that many of the animals depicted are rescues and thus physically disabled in some way, yet the focus is on their beauty rather than their injuries. A beautiful work of art for any home!
As a birdwatcher and photographer, Traer Scott’s Raptors sets a new benchmark for me to aspire to with each picture’s exquisite detail and perfect colors. It makes me realize how much can be missed when these raptors fly by on migration. The book also gives us an opportunity to see adorable immature birds.
