It is a no-frills, well written eye-witness account of a conflagration in the US, known to few. Father Pernin paints a gripping story of terror, in plain terms. There's also a believable miracle involved in his account. Between 1500 and 2500 lives were lost up in Wisconsin. And you never heard of the inferno because it happened the same day as Chicago burned with 250 lives lost, Oct. 8, 1871. The author tries to lose "himself" in his story -- he's self-effacing -- but the man was an eye witness. One of a handful who did.
The parallels between the Peshtigo Fire in 1871 and the Camp Fire in & around Paradise in 2018 are hard to miss. The word-images of evacuees caught by fire are evocative, though I'm grateful to be able to say that in 2018 more of us escaped than otherwise. If the Peshtigo paradigm truly was the start of modern firefighting in the wildland/town interface, I'm inspired to read more about it.
Excellent book for those who love history.
The book arrived on time & in perfect condition. A great read about a firestorm in Wisconsin at the same time the Great Chicago Fire happened.
Interesting first hand account of the fire, I wish I would have this as my jest book on the fire, as so many of the other books quoted this book as to what happened.
There are not a lot of sources on the Great Peshtigo Fire, so we must read what is available. The fire in Wisconsin occurred on the same day as the Great Chicago Fire, but Wisconsin's was much more devestating. One out of every two individuals lost their lives, amounting to more than 1,000 souls. The fire's heat swept through the area like a hurricane and became so intense that metal melted and things that had been buried underground in hopes of being saved were destroyed from the heat. The book is just 64 pages from beginning to end, including two introductions and bibliography, etc. The main story told by Peter Pernin has some drawbacks. Being written just a few years after the calamity the language is a bit quaint, with people described as having "great consternation" with the approaching flames. Also as Pernin was a Catholic priest he talks about seeing the "finger of God" in the fire, however many people there at the time felt the same way regardless of religious affiliation. The magnitude of the fire demands more books with more research and information. Let's hope some authors and historians take up the challenge.
