This book was a delightful surprise. It was a romance but without all of the heavy sex. The description of the Wales countryside was wonderful. I could picture it as I read.I'm am herbalist and it was obvious that Candace had done her research before writing. She gave just enough information that I knew she was using the right herbs but not enough information to anyone to try to copy and get in trouble.The story kept me interested and looking forward for more. Where I could tell where some of the story would lead, there were enough twists thrown at me that I was never bored and I was kept guessing enough to make me happy.I have found a new author to add to my reading list. Try her. If you like a good historical romance, with less heavy sex, this might be the author for you.
This book starts out with a shocking scene. A husband is auctioning off his wife in a small town market place. Lord Harkness, James, ups the bid greatly and buys her to save her. Her name is Verity and he tells her that she is free to go or she can live at his manor. She has no place to go, so he introduces her as a distant cousin. James himself suffers from PTSD from his time in the army. This disorder inadvertantly caused the death of his wife and son. The villagers hate him and call him Lord Heartless. Verity soon endears herself to the villagers by way of her herbal cures and her friendliness. She endears herself to James, too. But she knows that he can never love her.This was a good story. I pretty much guessed her husband's problem, but I was almost totally thrown by the villain. I say almost because there was a tiny inkling. All told, I really enjoyed the story and highly recommend it. Get the book. You won't be disappointed.
If you are a fan of Regency Romance novels and want to be captivated by one then I highly recommend Candice Hern’s book, Bride Sale. From the onset, the opening scene, Ms. Hern grabs the reader’s attention. We witness a snapshot of life in a small English village in Cornwall. In the middle of a raised platform stands a young woman, Verity Osborne Russell, in a leather harness. Her husband, Gilbert Russell, stands off toward one side as Verity is auctioned off in a wife sale. Stunned and humiliated, Verity’s future looks dismal until a local Baron, James Hargreaves, stumbles onto this atrocity. He is inextricably drawn to intervene and put an end to this young woman’s pain and plight. Without contemplating the consequences of his actions, he offers a bid no one can match. Now, faced with the responsibility of this woman, reality hits sets in. What is to come? How will they proceed? What will become of their lives? Ms. Hern masterfully unfolds their journey through her well-sculpted plotline and her multi-dimensional characters. Her protagonists, Verity and James, are complex and flawed personalities. Each one knows various degrees of pain and disappointment. They experience a gamut of emotions, such as fear, sadness, and feelings of inadequacies and snippets of happiness. They both share a common personality trait—perseverance. It is this trait that carries them through the ebb and flow of their struggles. Through the use of descriptive language and dialog the reader develops empathy for these two. I particularly enjoyed the way Ms. Hern uses actual facts like the Bride Sale to add authenticity to her story. The same applies to the details of Verity’s knowledge of herbal medicine to assist villagers with health issues. The plot line is a credible one. The protagonists’ quest lies in their journey toward healing. To build interest there are several twists and turns which contribute to the rising action of the plot. Likewise the interplay of the secondary characters with the protagonists helps to build intrigue. I found it fascinating how Ms. Hern used several characters as antagonists. This strategy adds to the intrigue and keeps the reader’s interest and perplexes them as to who the real villain is. I also enjoyed the interaction of the primary and secondary characters which helped to build tension. This was definitely a good read.
This is a good romance; nicely evolved across the whole book. The hero is haunted by his past, but in a way that is understandable, human, and heart-tugging rather than maudlin or exaggerated as many authors would tend to go. Believably kind heroine helps draw him out and he lets her. I recommend this book.
Gothic in the original definition of gothic. The intrigue and mystery surrounding the hero has the reader captured from the start. There were enough villains to keep the story going, the climactic resolution was satisfying, and the happily ever after was the perfect ending. The character development and story is very well written. To give an accurate review, there is mild sensuality toward the end of the book.
Gothic bodice ripper - and I note there is a trigger scene - towards the end. The setting is suitably moody, with wonderfully broody H and a traumatised h. The title explains the opening scenes well, with their mutual reticence about the sale as well and their mutual shame was a key plot device that worked well for me. The h regained her spirit first, and she was in some danger of being a Mary Sue but I liked her. I also liked how the ex husband was brought back into the story, although perhaps the resolution was not quite right. A nice read, and I enjoyed the bite of improper steam.
This is my first experience with this author and I am already looking for other stories. I found the story was complete with a vivid history of the country, its landscape, the climate, the social habits of the peoples. It is complete and I become totally cloaked by the overall presence of the characters and their lives. The acknowledgment of James' 'disorder' was described in a beautiful open manner that allowed the reader to understand andcome fully into his experiences. The conclusion was a refreshing moment for me, as I was somewhat surprised - which made me enjoy this story even more. I highly recommend this read.
