While I enjoyed the overall plot, the narration by the main character Dai I couldn't enjoy. While the character has Aspergers and perhaps the narration was supposed to reflect the nature of this I couldn't enjoy it. The book deals with bullying as well and it's effects on young people and it is supposed to help open a dialogue about this problem, which is good. Besides the narration, there were a couple of other issues that I had. I am not great at grammar myself, which is why I use an editor for my work. There seemed to be some areas that needed work in this regard. Also, much was made of Dais' intelligence in math and so you would have thought that the mystery would have been solved by some complex understanding of math that only someone of Aspergers would have seen, but that was not the case. While he did figure out the mystery, it didn't really have much to do with math. All that being said. This was mainly written for an audience much younger than me and I believe they would enjoy it. As I said, the plot was good and in a way the dialogue was similar to a child. I don't want to discourage anyone from reading this book, especially to their child or for their child as I believe they would enjoy it and it has an important lesson, it just wasn't for me.
Where is my hood rich book? I didn't get boy brainy.
An entertaining middle grade fiction book that kept me engaged. The informal first person narrative suited the book. I found the main character quirky and likeable. I was curious to see how everything worked out for him.The majority of the story was a paranormal mystery, with the bullying issue forming a strong subplot. It would be a good book to read aloud to a younger child to prompt a discussion about bullying.
Why should 7 - 13 year olds have all the fun? I'm a bit over 13 but I thoroughly enjoyed this witty, entertaining novel. It kept me reading, and enjoying, to the last page. I loved the assortment of characters, especially the wonderful Dai, the 'short, geeky, red-haired bespeckled nerd with Asperger's' and King Arthur (Arty to his friends!) I'll be looking for the follow up story, Granny's Gone AWOL in Guernsey to see what Dai Monday gets up to next.
What a fabulous book! This is aimed for the children, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading it with loads of smiles - and tears as well. The story flows well and all the historic bits everywhere makes it so interesting. As being bullied as a child myself, brought back some memories. Highly recommended for children and adults alike.
