This is a well written interesting story that kept my interest until the very end....however I think the main characters could be fleshed out much better & to say their relationship is weird is an understatement. The plot was very good & very plausible. What ruined this book for me was the ending, or lack thereof....in order to find out what happens to the characters after a suspenseful lead-in, you have to buy another book....there are many loose ends left. And if I had known this before I downloaded the book, I would have passed it over. I hate writers who do this to their readers. So I will NOT get the next book to find out the ending of this one just as a matter of principle...whatever happened to good authors who wrote the whole story in one book....I greatly miss them!
I am a huge fan of historical adventures that may add in some unconventional elements to make an intriguing story. Some of my favorite authors in this genre are Preston & Child, James Rollins, and Clive Cussler. I was thrilled to find author Kevin Tinto's debut novel, "ICE", that also pulls these elements together masterfully and it was a fantastic read. The story of Leah, an archaeologist, and her estranged husband, Jack, who set off on an adventure to Antarctica after a discovery in New Mexico. There is mystery here, danger, and a wonderful fast-paced adventure that kept me highly engaged. I loved the two main characters and their intense relationship and am excited to see that this will be a continuing series. Very well done. (This is an unbiased book review and the opinions given here are 100% my own.)
I really wanted to like this book. I really did. Action & adventure in wonderful places. But I just couldn't get past page after page and instance after instance of Leah's snarky, smart-aleck, narcissistic, entitled, know-it-all attitude. Ugggh, if only she would have shut up for a page or two and let the story unfold on its own I could have kept going. As it was, even for free, it's just not worth the effort. I'm sorry. The author knows how to spin a great tale, but this one character just spoiled it for me. Maybe next time.
Frankly, I am shocked at all of the 4- and 5-star ratings. Doesn't anyone care about the quality of the editing and grammar? If this book had not been riddled with bad spelling, missing words, and questionable grammar, I would have given it a 4, or even a 5 based on the interesting plot and action. I purchased this book on the strength of the reviews and the awards that were listed which makes encountering all of the sloppy errors even more confusing. Typically, more reviewers would have pointed the inconsistencies out and I would not have made the purchase. In any event, if you are a fan of a well-plotted thriller with a unique premise and solid action, then this book is worth the 99 cents(If you can tolerate all of the aforementioned issues). My advice to this author would be to charge $1.99 next time and hire a professional to catch all of the errors before putting it out there for public consumption.
Started strong, but sorry to say way too predictable. Hot sexy archeologist and estranged rugged mountain climber hunk husband. Main female lead seemed snarky, petty and zero appeal. I couldn't figure out why her all make team would follow her across the street, let alone across continents. When government types show up they are almost comically one sided, unfeeling and to all but one -- the typical buff Navy Seal with a heart of gold-- ready to abuse, kill and torture in the name of national security. I don't think anyone values my opinion, but if the author worked away from cliches, he could be great. The first part, concerning the actual archeology and mystery was well done, which made the latter part feel even more disappointing. This author has great potential. B u t what do I know? Maybe they are already filming the movie
A chance archaeological find in the Gila Forest geologically links Native Americans with Antarctica. A intrepid and governmental ill-favored archaeologist, her almost-ex-husband mountain climber and his billionaire patron set off to rescue an old plane from Antarctica and "dig" for proof of the discovery that would rewrite history.A great premise, but Tinto's research is haphazard at best and completely off base at worse. He links Native American tribes as living together that were hundreds, if not thousands, of years apart while ignoring the Apache, which were native to the Gila Forest where the site is discovered. Also, the author got the distances and geography of southwest New Mexico painfully incorrect. You can't drive in an hour from Albuquerque to the Gila Cliff Dwellings, it's a 6-7 hour drive with only one road in and out of the cliff dwellings monument. There are several other issues with the story just with the Gila Forest setting (note that the Gila Cliff Dwellings are surrounded by the Gila Wilderness, a region that doesn't allow any motorized vehicles within it, yet people in the story drive trucks and ATV all over the pristine and protected forest, including government officials).
Good adventure thriller but lacking in science and technology. The southwest archealogy is shallow and in many cases incorrect. Later in the story, the haftium iso bomb is pseudoscience...possible but far from actuality.Too many archealogical conjectures unanswered, too many alien and technogical conjectures unanswered.I did not find Dr Leah believable in word or action.Series needs significantly more research!!!!!
