A very human look back on a war that tore this country apart. As a young girl who came of age during that conflict it gave me a deeper understanding of the inherent contradictions in the US foreign policy as well as the feelings and sufferings of our veterans.
The question of whether or not anything new is possible in books about Vietnam is a non-question. No one would dare say this about World War II or the Holocaust. And this is especially true if the book offers us a new vision: this time one of multiple points of view, humor, the passion of a young man trying to understand his laconic father, and a brilliant synthesis of historical accounts, both personal testimony and revisionist ideas. His analysis of Vietnamese communism and how it differs from the the communism of other nations is worth the price of the book.Bissell is prodigiously well read: he does not pretend to have his father's visceral understanding of the war, and he presents himself as sometimes naive and bumbling in the questioning of his father. Both men are revealed as deeply sensitive and hungry for what is true.As a Vietnam combat veteran, I can attest to the books honesty (some vets will agree with him and some won't).This is a very important book. It is often not easy to read. The depiction of his father coming to terms with what happened at My Lai is painful and ultimately cathartic. Please read this book.So much of that horrible piece of history remains undigested in the American psyche, and the young often do not care. Tom Bissell is young, hecares, and he is courageous enough to want to know.
This book puts together a history of the Vietnam War with a personal account of a visit there with his father who had served in Vietnam. Tom Bissell is a very good writer and I found this book both educational and moving.

My introduction to the writing of Tom Bissell was through reading "Chasing the Sea: Lost Among the Ghosts of Empire in Central Asia", Tom's account of a visit to Uzbekistan for the purpose of writing on the environmental catastrophe that has befallen the Aral Sea in the latter part of the 20th century. As he did in that book, so too in "The Father of All Things", Tom has written an eminently readable autobiographical/historical work as a result of what seems to be a prodigious amount of research. The historical material in this work, concerning the Vietnam war, and the actions and motivations of key political figures in it, is a synopsis of the views and thoughts of many another writer. Tom's own response to and interaction with these wide-ranging reflections makes for a captivating collage through Tom's own eyes of research, as well as through the eyes of his father, an ex US marine whose life in some ways has been significantly shaped by his wartime experiences. As interesting as the material Tom writes is, it is further enhanced by his unique use of metaphor and a vocabulary that is broad without being verbose, as he expresses a lively humour, an often touching irony, and a sometimes wrenching pathos. Along with his carefully thought-through views and insights, Tom writes his heart onto the page.
Well-written attempt to look at the Vietnam war through the eyes of the younger generation of a veterans family. Unfortunately author Bissell did not really do his homework and traveled to the scene of his father's memories with an anti-war and anti-American bias. Some of his bibliographical comments tell us where he is coming from politically: For example, C. Dale Walton's excellent "The Myth of Inevitable Defeat in Vietnam" is dismissed, "Did I mention this book is nuts?" His superficial knowledge of Vietnamese culture and history is noteworthy, and his description of periods such as the Diem years is clearly inaccurate and at odds with very well-documented accounts such as Mark Moyar's "Triumph Forsaken." Also apparently missing in action were any serious efforts to see the anti-Communist, Vietnamese perspective such as might have been obtained quite readily from Vietnamese Americans who managed to escape the country. He could have spoken to Vietnamese (even some former VC) who were incarcerated for years and survived the grim "re-education" camps. Bissell seems intent on ragging even his own father to come around to his point of view and the idea that there was no such thing as an American "good guy" or positive accomplishments. Near the end of their trip, father to son: "I'm sorry. I know you want me to tell you I think the war was wrong. But I don't."
I am about the same age as Tom's father, born in 1942. I did not fight in Vietnam. I was in the Peace Corps from 1964 to 1966 (Vietnam was hardly known when I entered). I had some difficult questions asked of me by my Nigerian teacher colleagues in 65-66. When I returned home in Fall of '66, I checked with my draft board and they said I probably would be drafted in a few months. Since I was a teacher, and got a job 2nd semester, I was dropped from 1-A to 2-A, but I know I would have headed to Canada. I voted for LBJ, but when I returned I protested against him and worked for McCarthy. I ended up voting for Nixon (I was raised an Ike/Ford conservative Republican).I eventually went to Japan to teach in 1974 and am still here, retired. I had some cousins in the war and I actually live only about 10 miles from Yokota Air Base, which played a vital link in Vietnam days. I found this book to be so real and gut-wrenching and honest. I have never visited Vietnam and have no desire to, but many of my friends have and a number have even taught there and one has retired in NaTrang.The Vietnam War years were a tragic time for so many people in so many countries. The lying and deceit, the huge waste of life and money, just got way out of hand. FINALLY Cronkite said, "enough" and Paul Harvey said, "enough". Yeah, SANITY.Read this book. I have read a lot of books on Vietnam, but I think this one captures something other books miss
