I bought the book in the UK last year and didn't really know anything about the author or the series. It's really a fascinating look at medieval life in a mystery context. It takes place during the Reformation in London. The main character, Shardlake, is a hunchback lawyer who is reluctantly drawn into solving the case. I found the descriptions of the various legal proceedings and courts remarkable. Shardlake is a medieval version of Morse. Since I finished this book, I have bought the other books in the series and loved them all. The plots are unusual and the historical research quite remarkable. If you like 16th century historical fiction and mysteries this is a wonderful read.

“Dark Fire” is a second book in the Matthew Shardlake series and I enjoyed it a little less than the first one (“Dissolution”). There is no need to read first book in order to enjoy the second one. The plot is good, book is well written and historical details are very interesting. But what I missed was an almost magical atmosphere of the “Dissolution”. This was mostly because the big chunks of the action of “Dark Fire” take place in London and involve a lot of back and forth traveling through the city. This may be a good component for people familiar with London topography but since my multiple visits to London were limited to the airport and I do not feel attached to the city I found these parts a little repetitive and boring. It could be just opposite for people more familiar with, and fond of London. I also hoped to learn a little more about the legendary Greek Fire. But there is no doubt in my mind that “Dark Fire” is a very good historical mystery novel and I am planning on reading more of the series. I just got hard cover of “Heartstone” (printed on the wonderful silky paper) as a gift and I am looking forward to reading it.

I enjoyed Dark Fire for several reasons. For onr,the author has investigated the apprarance dailylife and customs of mid sixteenth century London extensivly and gives us a very realistic background to the action. The most important part of a novel , of course , is the story line .Here we have not one , but two very different problems to be resolved in short time. One story line concerns a state secret , a secret weapon and the other a falsely accused young woman under threat of execution.Gripping fiction very beautifully set seamlesly into recorded history , with no distortion of known facts.

Dark Fire is the second of the Matthew Shardlake Mystery Series written by the acclaimed historical fiction novelist C.J. Sansom. If one is looking for a painless way to enjoy the history of Tudor England ( Henry VIII) read all of this wonderful Sansom series which begins with Dissolution and currently ends with Heartstone.imagesThe search for the secret of Dark Fire, desperately sought by Thomas Cromwell on behalf of Henry VIII ,leads lawyer Shardlake through the perils of multiple murders and further intrigue. Anne Boleyn has already been beheaded and Anne of Cleves, the fourth wife of Henry , is about to be dethroned in favor of Catherine Howard. Amidst the turmoil of the king's wives, Cromwell seeks to protect his own position by providing the monarchy with the formula for Dark-Fire, an ancient form of flame thrower, which in its day, in warfare, was akin to a modern-day nuclear missile. He turns to Shardlake to unravel the mystery and find this weapon for the king.As is usual with Sansom, there is a parallel plot, this time involving Shardlake trying to keep a young woman falsely accused of murder from death by torture, of course in the Tower of London.Dark Fire is a highly recommended gordonsgoodread! If you are new to Sansom pick up his work and read them in the following order: Dissolution, Dark Fire, Sovereign, Revelation and Heartstone. Overviews of these Sansom books can be searched at gordonsgoodreads.com.Finish these and you will be a well-informed conversationalist regarding Tudor England. The Sansom novels present history and humanity folded together in perfect form. I know I'm preaching to the choir here. Nobody is likely to read this review who isn't a fan, like myself, of C. J. Sansom's meticulously researched and darkly atmospheric historical mysteries. Everybody seems to have summarised the plot and setting of 16th century London fairly well, so I'll just add my two shillings worth here on my experience of the book in general.I liked this book only slightly less than the first book, Dissolution. I know it's a tired trope, but one really can't beat a monastery for atmospherics. But Sansom has done his research on the atmospherics of London as well, which leads to what seems to me an important point: If one fancies English historical novels with a lawyer as a sleuth, it is well to have them written by an Englishman trained as a solicitor with a doctorate in History, as per Sansom. This book, for me, had darker undertones than Dissolution. The words on the barrel of Greek fire: Lupus est homo homini - Man is a wolf to man - are borne out relentlessly throughout the novel. The reader will have his/her stomach turned more than once by the many gruesome sights and acts made all the more harrowing by their being based on historical fact. The overall effect can become lugubrious indeed.Yet Sansom retains his deft poetic touch as well. If I were asked to briefly express how all this business about dark fire ends up, I could do far worse than echoing Shardlake's reflections as he gazes out over the Thames:"Something bright and fiery on the water made me start for a moment, then I saw it was only a ray of sunlight falling through the light cloud, flecking the waves tossed up by the wind a flickering bright yellow."
