From Publishers Weekly

Budding Baby Warhols can fix their gaze on this oversize board book of 12 eye-stimulating patterns, credited to well-known artists. Each picture features chunky black-and-white shapes to catch a child's attention. Some pop pieces, like Takashi Murakami's deliriously happy-faced flower, resemble conventional child fare. Others are unorthodox but promising choices: Kazimir Malevich's modernist Black Cross is an enormous plus sign, and Julian Opie's stylized human portraits have smiley-face dot eyes and serious mouths. A few pages offer familiar subjects: a duck silhouette, a pear or a carrot, while the intersecting ovals of Josef Albers's Together could suggest a family or a nest, and Keith Haring's iconic Radiant Baby—a crawling figure emanating exclamation-point lines—graces the cover. Little ones unmoved by figurative work can linger on abstract compositions like conceptual artist Damien Hirst's grid of grayscale dots or '60s op artist Bridget Riley's aggressive zigzags. The images repeat on three folded friezes, tucked into the back of the book, ready for installation in art connoisseurs' play spaces or bedrooms. The high-contrast art should prove mesmerizing; no batteries required. Up to age 3. (Sept.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From School Library Journal

PreS—Child-development experts have long advocated the use of high-contrast images with infants due to the difficulties newborns have in changing focus from foreground to background. These bold, black-and-white selections were chosen to address this issue. The pictures range from Patrick Caufield's Duck, a silhouette, to Bridget Riley's Fragment 3, a dizzying series of zigzags. There are also several simplified portraits, e.g., Julian Opie's Natasha, whose stylized hair suggests the carved surfaces of a woodcut. The images are glossy and slightly reflective, while the white pages have a matte finish—another contrast. With a square trim size and heavy cardboard pages, the book could be enjoyed when propped on a changing table or crib or held by an adult. The last spread contains brief notes about infant vision, picture credits, and an envelope with 3 folded posters of the 12 scenes for nursery walls. Information about each artist has been placed on the back of the friezes. Libraries will want to consider whether these "consumables" are assets or deterrents, but babies won't care if they disappear. The variety of patterns offers an interesting alternative to the more traditional shapes found in Tana Hoban's classic Black and White (HarperCollins, 2007), now available in an accordion-fold format. Will young picture readers develop a greater open-mindedness toward abstract art? Time will tell.—Wendy Lukehart, Washington DC Public Library Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Our daughter loves this book. I would say it is her favorite of all our books for her. Early on from newborn and a few weeks after, she did not really understand books. But as the weeks went on, this was the one she responded to most. There is one image in the book that she coos at every single time. It is amazing to watch what they respond to. I feel that these images are a good match for her development. Engaging but not overly stimulating. This book also comes with cards that you can use or that you can hang in their room as little art pieces. We highly recommend this book.

I ordered this book right off my friends' baby registry to give to them at their baby shower. The expectant parents are both musicians so I thought this was a nice present coming from me, a visual artist. Well... baby is now here and my friends report that the book is the BIGGEST HIT in their house. Baby stares at the images and remains interested in them for a long time. He is especially interested in the images that depict a face. The parents have placed the included posters all around his crib and I regularly receive photos of the baby looking at them. The images are definitely attention-grabbing for infants as young as 1 week old! He was disinterested in toys or other stimulating items they put around, and this book has captured his attention!I'd recommend this for anyone interested in getting an art-related gift for a baby. It is a nice large size, and the included pull-out posters that are included are a nice touch! My friends and their baby are definitely using/enjoying them.

I received this as a baby shower gift, loved it, and have since gifted it to several friends with new babies. They have all RAVED about it. So much more interesting and beautiful art than the typical "black/white" baby books. My baby loved it beginning around six weeks of age, and still enjoys looking at it now at seven months.

I have given this book to all my friend and family who are expecting. It is a beautiful book. I love that is features so many unique artists and it's not just pics of zebras and penguins. The high contrast between black and white is great for baby eye development. and one great feature of this book is that it is a larger board book. a few moms have told me they love to set it up freestanding when they are changing diapers or during tummy time.

I am soooo glad I purchased this book for my baby boy. He was about 6 months old when we bought it and I wish we'd found it sooner. He loves the big, simple, black and white pictures. My son is now 14 months old and this is still one of a small handful of books he will pull of the shelf by himself and want us to flip through for him. It was certainly his first true "favorite" book. I think it would have been nice to have these big pictures available to him as a younger infant when he couldn't really see that well, but I look forward to using the book with my next baby on the way. I also feel this would make a good gift. Oh, and the book is well made. My baby has tried to "kiss" the picture of the woman's face, and has tossed it around, but it is nowhere near as beat up as a couple of his other favorite books. It has thick pages, so not as many pictures in at you might expect by the thickness, but it is a very nice book. And baby loves it, so I love it too.

I bought this as a baby shower present for my friend, since I wanted to get something art/design related as that is the profession my husband and I are in. I like that the book's pages are thick board material, which is very appropriate/sturdy for a baby or young child. The graphics are done very well, and simplified into black and white and thicker lines, which I think is a good introduction to this type of art for developing minds. It also came with a frieze to hang in the room, but was attached to the book with a sticker so only the owner of the book can open it. I did not get to see the frieze but thought that was a nice touch, nonetheless.

Great deal on this book, but it came super dirty. I had to clean and sanitize whatever brown filthy spots were on it before I would put it in front of my baby. The book itself gets 5 stars. Baby seems pretty entertained by it and loves to stare at it.

During the early developmental stages, this board book provided the contrast between positive and negative space, plus shapes/form detection. Now, a bit later, it has become a novel board book to sit down and look at, differently, as tot is a wee bit older. It still gets chosen from time to time.
