First and foremost let me state it is a priviledge to review such an awesome work penned by men who have put their lives on the line for our freedoms.Two of the three men on the cover have been called home for other good works but they passed as true heroes..helping their fellow men in need.Glen Doherty ran to the sound of violence in the finest tradition of men since the dawn of time on 9/11/2012. With time his heroism will be fully recognized and the nations highest honors will be bestowed on this man. His writing held within this work will be the trusted truth cherished by firearms enthusiasts and men of honor for eternity.Chris Kyle, arguably one of the most beloved SEALs in history passed while helping a troubled fellow veteran - his foreward is fitting and a reminder to all of us that a lighted torch must be carried by all.And as to Chief Brandon Webb - it is sometimes harder for those left behind to carry forward but it is vital that those who remain with us, before they are called home, must carry on the good works. Now for content.The writing style is nice easy prose and does not get get bogged down in minutia and technical jargon. The work takes us through the history of sniping in a summary form with highlights to carry the day - who can't be in awe of a simple Finnish man defending his country as only he can do best.The details to look for on any great shoointg piece are straightforward - a simple bill to see if your barrel is free of the fore end of the stock is a prime example of great, easy to understand writing. Even a novice can understand all the details as we work through. I will leave it to the reader to explore deeper - it is all there, in simple writing.The various types of rifles and their strengths and weakness get presented - in a very well layed out work with plenty of good photos and diagrams (yes we do get some cameo shots of Green Beret/Ranger Sniper Jack Murphy with his various rigs...) that makes it all easy to pull together. The highlight for ballistics geeks comes with the CheyTac descriptions, comparison charts and test examples...just enough data to wet your whistle if you desire to dive deeper into all levels of firearms ballstics. But with this book you do not need to, there is enough in the pages to get you rolling."Sniper" finishes off with some great summary explanations of optics, ballistic modifiers and the way forward with technologies working in the field with IR, ballistic computers and laser rangefinding. It closes out with a good discussion on the morality of killing - in an era where nations can kill hundreds of millions in the blink of an eye - the simple sniper can make all the difference in the world and prevent such holocausts. We would all do well to take heed as evil still exists out there.Well done men. I love the book.
I've read several of Brandon's books, and they are all great. I myself was in the Navy, and this lets me see a part of the Navy past and present that most never see, inside or outside the Navy. I'm also a precision rifle shooter, and Webb was the driving force that revamped the Navy's Special Warfare Sniper School. I bought this book after reading Webb's "The Killing School", and this book brings that all into reality before you with a wealth of pictures, information, and so much more. But it not only cover's Webb's time instructing at the school but also the past and present. It's a complete work and well worth the purchase. You won't be disappointed by this book. In fact, I think you'll be quite impressed as I was. And then with all that... the fact Glen Doherty contributed to this work is something special, and Brandon has described the close relationship the two had in restructuring the school. This is so much more than just a book.

I started reading this kind of book after seeing Lone Survivor 18 months ago, and several months later American Sniper. I'm intrigued by the skill and tenacity required to do this kind of work. I don't generally support the way the U.S. uses its military, but I do support the people we send down range. I have read other authors but this book and others by these SOFREP authors make this world seem very human and interesting to an outsider like me. I am not a gun person but I learned a lot about the military and sniper's world from reading this book. The world is less for losing Glen Doherty and others, and if you want to know why READ THIS BOOK
I've built many rifles for my own use through the years and thought I knew a lot about what was needed for a great shooter.This book has learned me a few things, which isn't a bad thing, that I'll be integrating into the next build.Could have been a bit more "techy" for my taste but the info is super great. Would you expect any thing else from top tier Navy?The equipment listed are not all new but of a very high quality and the opinions given on the gear are very trustworthy.If your wanting to purchase a long range rifle/scope reading this work will get you on the right path.... or you could just go buy an H&K. ;)
This book is one of the most interesting books I have ever read. This book is basically about the history of snipers and how it has transformed throughout the ages, and through those transformations that it has impacted the Navy Seal sniper program.This book is truly insightful, and very interesting and I had a blast realigning it.So I would recommend it if you like history, and as well as wanting to become a sniper for the SEALS.
