After two sessions in a beginning duplicate bridge class, I dashed home to Amazon to find written instructions on this intricate and sometimes confusing game. I purchased three bridge books and by far, this one by Kantar was perfect for me, a raw beginner! The explanations are clear (in the two other bridge books the explanations are confusing!) and there are plenty of examples with just enough logic to illustrate the purpose of each bridge technique. I was a little put off by the sequence of topics, but after reading more, I realized that Kantar's choice of sequence makes sense. (Bidding is not the first chapter.) A key feature for me is the humor scattered throughout. While plowing through a new topic and beginning to become frustrated, unexpectedly, I would encounter a humorous comment that lightened my mood and cleared my brain. Not sloppy silly, but just enough humor to smooth the way through the remainder of the instruction. The sign of a teacher is to recognize when students might drop out in frustration then to provide encouragement and or relief. Good job, Kantar, for keeping me engaged! And thank you for assisting me to become a more competitive player. P.S. I have moved on to other books on this subject, but continue to review Bridge for Dummies once a week. In other words, this book is vital for a beginner and useful for intermediate.

I was trying to learn to play the card game Bridge. I was having a hard time :( One of my friends suggested the book Bridge for Dummies. It is perfect for someone who has never played bridge before in their life. The book explains strategies, plays, and terminology so easily a sixth grader could understand it. Thank you so much :)

Excellent book for the the new comers to Brige. Be patient as you go through the book, chapter by chapter. Read, and re-read. Not all will come together the first time but stick to the book. Kantar has a great sense of humor and knows how to simplify the contents. He will keep you involved. The section on Bidding is especially well crafted. Some chapters could be a bit shorter. At times, it gets over whelming. Yet as a book, I give five stars to Bridge for Dummies.Bankim

I hate the titles of the Dummies books and resisted purchasing it but my husband bought it anyway (fortunately.) I took 10 weeks of beginning bridge and learned the basics. The Dummies book complimented my lessons but spent more time on strategy. The book is very well organized. I liked that I could skip ahead for example to the scoring chapter and not really miss anything previously covered. If they do reference something discussed earlier in the book they give the subject and page. Since I had the lessons I can't comment on reading the book without any background in bridge at all but to build on the lessons I took it is excellent.

Eddie Kantar is probably one of the most qualified instructors of bridge on the planet. As a member of the Bridge Hall of Fame, he presents an introductory course that's easy to follow, then more insightful chapters on strategy and advanced bidding, until the reader feels graduated by the closing paragraphs. My only criticism would be the somewhat clunky language found in some chapters that might be difficult to follow without reading the book from start to finish, despite the author assuring his readers they can open the pages and start just about anywhere. Overall, the 'dummy' aspect lives up to its name. I'll confess I knew almost nothing about bridge before reading Kantar's book, and now I'm well-versed in the game. Having read other instructional guides, this is one of the better ones.

Eddie Kantar is a highly respected bridge expert. In BRIDGE FOR DUMMIES he has assembled his knowledge into an easily read and understandable primer. This compilation of bridge information is extensive and expertly presented with diagrams to illustrate the principle and situations encountered in bridge games. My only complaint was that some information referred back to other sections and was not easily interpreted in the sections it appeared. This is a minor complaint and one that might be unjustified due to the complexity of bridge strategy, but I had the feeling that a little more thought could have made the instructions a little easier. This is an important addition to the bridge player's book shelf.Schuyler T WallaceAuthor of TIN LIZARD TALES

I started out with almost no knowledge of bridge and haven't finished the book yet, so I don't think I'm a great judge. So far, I find the same clever (and very readable) language as any other "Dummies" book and it seems to be covering the same material I am getting in class. I always have a bit of trouble with the Dummies books however, because they always seem to break things down too much and I tend to feel that they're taking a scattershot (?) approach. I think they do that in order to get more clever remarks in...and all the Dummies books seem to be that way, so I know the publishers are looking for a certain approach. I prefer more more orderly organization with more continuity. At least it has an index and is a good reference book. To me a Dummies book is always a decently comprehensive (but mediocre) text on a subject.

The problem with Bridge is that once people know how to play, they don't want to play with beginners. It is a much more complicated and fascinating game than I realized, but I end up having to play on-line instead of with humans.
