I enjoyed the first one. Had a real interesting twist on the person returns home to run a sweet shop--goes home to run a mortuary. This one--I don't mind a reasonable amount of violence, but in this one the description is so graphic, and could easily have been summarized except for the items that help solve the case. Never really justifies the torture. And they allow themselves to be caught in a potentially dangerous situation which was dangerous. Also, I am fine with sex between consenting adults. The sex in the first book advanced plot and characterization. This went on and on..I suppose if it were an erotic novel it would be OK, but this is not advertised as such. One thing that really irritated me was that one victim is found with a piece of paper in his trachea. I doubt you could overcome the gag reflex to swallow a piece of paper--try it yourself. But if you did, it would go in the esophagus, NOT the trachea. You would die with paper in your trachea. And he is supposed to have managed this impossible feat as the perp drives up beside him and shoots him in the head--single bullet. I think I'll skip the third.
I loved the first J.J. Graves book and this book did not disappoint either. I LOVED it!! The book starts with J.J. just coming back to Bloody Mary after being gone for a few months (12 weeks, I believe). We find that she just up and left to sort things out after nearly dying. She has found out new things about her parents during this time away. Things heat up pretty quickly between her and Jack (yay!) but I could have done without the love scenes.A preacher is found dead and it turns out he has ties to a good friend of J.J. and Jack's and he is also homosexual. For those who that may be a turn off for; there are no gay love scenes or anything. It is a character in a book, look past it if it bothers you. Then another person winds up dead with ties to a Supremacy group after talking to J.J.Meanwhile, J.J. is still trying to get back into the routine of things and still dealing with almost being killed. I did not think that adding that in was over-the-top or dramatic; I felt it was very real and needed to be included. I hate watching shows or reading books where a character is almost killed and they are emotionally as if nothing happened. I know it is not reality, but come on! You don't almost die and not be affected by it, so I liked that she was so affected by this tragedy, it was very real.Typos! It seems to be common with ebooks, but it is really annoying. Entire words are missing that shouldn't be; words are switched, I think my 6 year old daughter could proofread better than whomever proofread this book. Despite the typos the book was still awesome so I gave it 5 stars!I can't wait to read the next book and see what happens.Oh and I will say the ending was not expected! There was one character who was partly guilty and I did not see that coming. I look a few twists in the plot and Liliana Hart always does just that.
I gave the first on 4 stars and frankly I found this one just as good. I have read books that are much more graphic in the sex department so that didn't bother me and that's what couples do when they first realize they have fallen in love. I didn't mind the cliff hanger end bc I had already read the blurb for the next one, so... meh. I also didn't find the same level of gruesomeness as some of the other reviewers but I like Bones and Criminal Minds so lighten up people. Here is what gave it 3 instead of higher for me and this will be a spoiler so if u don't want to know stop reading now...when they are in the barn Jack asks her for her gun when 5 pages or so before hand it CLEARLY says that she had left her gun at home for the first time since she was attacked in the first book. It also said that Lorna 'let slip' that the reverend was gay when it wasn't her it was Vance who told JJ and Jack that they had been lovers. A good editor would have caught both of those glaring mistakes. One final thought was that it would have been beneficial to have a short novella in between book one and two bc the way the author handled the information of what happened while JJ was licking her wounds so to speak, was really not enough.
...but it's just not for me. If the focus had remained mostly on the crime, which was pretty interesting, it would have been better. But there's a lot of filler about JJ and Jack's romance and JJ's parents that I really didn't care about.Maybe it's because I read these two books back to back, but there were a lot of inconsistencies that bothered me. In the first book, Jack is described as 6' tall, in this book he's now 6'5". In the first book he's a total manwhore, in this one that's been exaggerated because he's with JJ now? Little things like that may not bother all readers, but I found it annoying. It this book, much is made about everyone in the town hating JJ, and it seemed to materialize just to add drama, make her the town pariah. She was very much "woe is me", and I just kept wishing we'd get back to the murders. There's a big cliffhanger at the end, but I didn't care, the series ends here for me.
