Kathleen O'Neal Gear is a former state historian and archaeologist for Wyoming, Kansas, and Nebraska for the U.S. Department of the Interior. She has twice received the federal government's Special Achievement Award for ""outstanding management"" of our nation's cultural heritage. W. Michael Gear holds a master's degree in archaeology and has worked as a professional archaeologist since 1978. He is principal investigator for Wind River Archaeological Consultants. Together they have written the North America's Forgotten Past series (People of the Morning Star, People of the Songtrail, People of the Mist, People of the Wolf, among others); and the Anasazi Mysteries series. I am always amazed by the talent and genuine skill the Gears employ when writing.They are two of the most talented people I've ever had the pleasure of "knowing" (through their work).When the Gears write about ancient civilizations, their words paint living pictures that spring off the page and onto my imagination in such a way that's it like watching a movie!Their depth of their understanding of ancient peoples, customs and traditions; their knowledge and ability to impart that information in an entertaining way and the scope of their own imaginative process is truly enviable, enchanting and enjoyable. Their books are always entertaining. ALWAYS. This one, The People of the Morning Star, is no exception.The main characters--Night Shadow Star, Blue Heron, Seven Skull Shield, The Morning Star and Fire Cat--are incredibly complex and developed. By the end of the book, I felt as if I knew them all personally and could pick them out of a crowd by the way they walked, talked and gestured. Blue Heron's pipe smoke would lead me right to her. Fire Cat's prowess with a weapon and integrity would prove him out. Night Shadow Star's nobility; Seven Skull's humor, playfulness...and ferociousness in battle; The Morning Star's ambiguity... all of this I would recognize in these characters were I to meet them on the street--so well written were they.The enemy--the antagonist, the demon--who hounds them is so frighteningly evil he is terror personified. I will not give away his identity. Suffice it to say he is scary. This is an evil beyond imagination.This is a wonderful book. Just wonderful. I would recommend it to anyone, anywhere, anytime. It's just amazing!

I’ve been a fan of the Gears since I picked up their first book many years ago. This new series begins with People of the Morning Star, a saga of the Cahokian people. Cahokia was an enormous city that “at its height, covered more than six square miles around what is now St. Louis.” Ancient people often packed up and moved to the great city. The Gears have captured the awe-inspiring qualities of this early civilization with their usual skill. Well researched, the couple weave the spiritual resurrection of the Cahokian ‘Morning Star’ who is reborn in the body of Chunkey Boy. The Morning Star’s Clan assumes coveted positions in Cahokia. But, with power comes envy. As with all ruling classes, there are those who would challenge the divine Morning Star and his family. While he is instrumental in this brilliant tale of the past, it is his sister, Night Shadow Star, who captured my attention. Widowed and devastated by the loss of her husband, who was killed during a raid on Red Wing Town, Night Shadow Star uses a type of hallucinogenic to descend to the Underworld. She becomes “possessed” by the spirit Piasa. Thus, begins a story of intrigue, murder, mystery, and secrets. The authors guide the reader through the interwoven lives of the characters, developing every personality and the conflicts they face. Someone is killing Morning Star’s Four Winds Clan members in horrible and violent ways. The Morning Star himself is attacked! As the characters grow and the story progresses, it reads like a detective story from the ancient past. The Gears show an incredible ability to create a political mystery from distant times. I fell in love with the characters Fire Cat of the Red Wing Clan, and Seven Skull Shield, a rascally thief. Both prove to be unlikely heroes, and along with Night Shadow Star grow into fascinating characters. Set in a colorful landscape of towering mounds and homes, rich spiritual journeys, and life altering mysteries, this is a story to savor. I enjoyed this excellent book so much I have already started reading the next book in the series. I highly recommend the book to anyone who enjoys mystery, history, early North American civilizations, and thrilling action.

Writers of text books write facts. Really great fiction writers present those facts by humanizing them. Michael and Kathleen Gear can weave those facts into a stunning look back into the time. New finds bring new facts to light, and interestingly enough, the reader absorbs history much easier than trying to remember dates and battles. The huge, sprawling city of Cahokia attracted people the way big cities attract folks nowadays. Michael and Kathleen Gear make Cahokia and the Cahokians come to life. I'd give the book 5 stars.

This is another fine story by the Gears .. it takes us back to Cahokia, we find Power stirring, while people are sucked into the whirlpool. Cleverly written with well fleshed characters. This book is wonderful in the way it sets up the puzzle pieces, then managed in an entertaining way. I couldn't put it down.

The Gears (Michael and Kathleen) produce the very best indigenous people novels there are. Their background in archeology and knowledge of the Indian cultures make for fantastic stories. Having read their entire series since they began - I await every new novel with great anticipation. A must read for anyone interested in everything you want to know about the American Indian tribes and how they lived, loved and fought for what they believed in. You walk away with a great appreciation for a culture oft times misunderstood and biased by what we were led to believe as youth.

They have done it again. Micheal and Kathleen are my favorite authors. Besides being very entertaining, the many concepts I have learned through their books were a big help in the Archaeology Course I took recently.

People of the Morning Star has become my favorite Gear novel. Action-packed and filled with interesting historical facts and lore, this book grips one right from the opening passages. I have found that the authors, frequently, spend quite a bit of time setting the stage so to speak. Nothing wrong with that approach, just their method. In this novel, one is allowed to pick up facts as the excitement unfolds. I like this approach much better because those of us who follow the books have a pretty good sense of the different periods.I look forward to the next installment.

This is a great book! I have been wanting to grow my own garden and have a few tomato plants, I downloaded this book to see if it could help me, and wow it has! The author has listed many different types of tomatoes and how long it takes to grow them. There are so many different types of tomatoes that I have never heard of! I have learned a lot from this book and I can't wait to start growing my own tomatoes!

I've had gardens and have grown tomatoes all my life, but when I saw this book being offered, I thought, here's a whole book on planting tomatoes. I wonder if maybe I'm missing something? Allison Keys, the author has done a lot ow research on this book. I had no idea that there were 700 varieties of tomatoes worldwide. I grow in an area of the world where the soil is rather high pH, and tomatoes like a lower pH. I used to know that but I forgot. I'm correcting that as I put in my tomatoes this year with lots of compost this time.

This is a very information rich handbook. It doesn't have pictures which is the only fault I find obvious, other than a few grammar errors, and I suppose that if you really need further explanation on a certain point you can always Google. I have been growing tomatoes for years and still found several points in the book informative and noteworthy. Had I not been so mildly impressed, I would have given it 4 stars for not having a section on greenhouse growing and lacking pictures or illustrations.

I'll admit... keeping plants alive has always been a struggle for me! But, I love the idea of having my own garden with fresh vegetables all the time. This book explains everything I needed to do this right. I can determine the best type of tomato for my location and soil, as well as the days it takes to grow. I never realized that I may want to grow different tomatoes for different uses, like salsa, sauce, etc! This is great information to get started.

Blood, Sweat and Tea is a book based on the blog "Random Acts of Reality" by a London, UK, based emergency medical technician (EMT), Tom Reynolds (a pseudonym, Tom has now revealed himself to be Brian Kellett). I'm an occasional visitor to Reynold's blog and always found him to be interesting, honest and well worth reading. This first book (there is now a second book called More Blood, More Sweat and Another Cup of Tea) is a collection of some of Reynolds favourite posts from his blog, published in 2006.While it is obviously a book of blog postings, it does hang together as a coherent collection and is very readable. I could spend much longer reading his posts in this format than I could spend reading a screen for.His posts are not sugar-coated and show what life is like in the ambulance service. If I was Reynolds I would be very frustrated in having to put up with the non-emergency 999 calls that waste the time of already busy EMTs. He also talks touchingly about some of the tragic calls that he also is involved with.All-in-all a very interesting read - everyone should read a copy, especially those people who call 999 when they should be visiting their GP or taking themselves to A&E!

This was an interesting read. It is missing the soap opera of Grey's Anatomy and the evil trial and error of House, but it is a read that will give you a peek into the life of an ambulance attendant in London. I am sure it isn't too different here in the states. It is based on a blog:[...]I think this would make a great TV series. Now I am off to read the next, More Blood, etc.

This is a true story of an English ambulance worker. It was a quick read. I enjoy medical novels so this was enjoyable to me. It had a little bit of everything. When you are between genres, or need a change of pace---try this.

I enjoyed reading the real life work life of a British EMT. He writes well and has a great sense of humor and compassion. His humor and compassion comes out in his writing yet isn't maudlin or nasty about the people he encounters in his job. I recommend this book.

This book from 1993 to 1995 is a depressing view of the inside of a multimedia project run by young, Generation X Microsofters who sincerely believed in the company vision. Although, with a company that large, that diverse and that disorganised, I think the vision couldn't be seen for the re-organisations.The book follows a group of 20 somethings from the initial ideas of the multimedia project (called Sendak until it's official name of Explorapedia was chosen,) through to almost the delivery stage. And there are two over-riding themes that contribute to the almost failure of the project: unclear lines of control, and indecisiveness.Let's look at these in turn.Production Manager, Project Manager, Art Director, Lead Programmer and Chief Coffee Maker. (Okay, I make that last one up.) Throughout the multimedia project detailed in this book, the roles people undertook always seemed to be fluid in their meaning and responsibilities. One reason for this was that, as Microsoft was growing so fast, internal people were often promoted over external hires and so some quite young staff ended up in fairly senior positions. People who once worked as equals, were now supervisor and the supervised. Which might not be a bad thing, but without the proper training, could be quite catastrophic in the personal and professional relationships of all those involved. Here, this was experienced as the previous Art Director on another project was now the Producer (or the other way around, or the Production Manager - I should have taken notes while reading it,) and it wasn't always clear who had what responsibility. So, one person was sometimes butting in and doing the other's work, and as the project went on, there would be re-organisation after re-organisation which lead to mass confusion about who exactly the decision makers were.We trained hard, but it seemed that every time we were beginningto form up into teams, we would be reorganised. I was to learn laterin life that we tend to meet any new situation by reorganising; anda wonderful method it can be for creating the illusion of progresswhile producing confusion, and demoralisation. -- Petronius Arbiter, 210 B.C.It just seemed to be the Microsoft Way.The other problem with this project was the scope of what was being produced. The clearest voice of reason in all of this was the cranky programmer, who knew quite well when things had to be decided, and not changed in order to have the code finished and tested to meet the ship date. The programmer, as one of the final steps in the design and development process, always appeared to be the one that had slipped and missed their milestones, rather than the designers who had missed their deadlines at the beginning of the project because of an inability to make a decision, and stick to it.And here's where the traditional Project Management Methodology and also Agile Project Management Methodology can fail: once a decision has been made, even though it's software, it costs a lot to go back and re-engineer something. This project almost failed because the scope was a wibbly-wobbly thing that the team never really got a hold on, wrestled to the ground and took control of. As such, late in the design and early development stages, fundamental changes were introduced that changed the game (literally.)So, what can be learned from this? Make sure that the client (even an internal client) knows that a change in scope means changes in time and cost. It's an immutable law of Project Management, and I know we all know it, but sometimes we need to state the obvious. Also, experience pays off - in software development most people are in their 20s, and now that I'm not any more, I can look back and see how inexperienced I used to be, and how much there really is to learn about process management.The project shipped, many people were burnt out, angry, demoralised and just plain over it. But in the end, as we all know, we just get back up again and walk into the maelstrom for one more go, because we believe this time it will be better - it just has to be,Finally, one criticism of the book: I kept getting lost with regards to who was who. Sometimes the author would use a person's given name, and then later in the book, their family name, and then back again. So, as people changed positions, I didn't know who the Project Manager was from the Producer to the Production Manager. It's a small quibble, and really in the end it doesn't distract from the book.

As mentioned in the introduction, you could read this as a story of success or a record of failure, depending on your focus. The Sendak/Explorapedia was released a year late, overbudget, and did not meet the original design objective of a complete multimedia children's encyclopedia on one CD-Rom. On the other hand, it actually did meet the original estimated release date, and it went on to become a best seller and a benchmark in it's category.Actually, I think Fred Moody missed seeing the real benefit to Microsoft of the Explorapedia project. While Moody focussed on chronicling the damage created by the personality conflicts and differences in communication styles, he missed seeing the positive consequences of tackling a project like this which pushes the envelope of existing technology.For instance, here is my take on two of the "problems" described by Moody:1: In the beginning, there was no software developer assigned fulltime to the project.Positive result: The designers, who were mostly Mac people, designed the encyclopedia to use Mac-like features, such as sprites with transparent backgrounds. This was not available on the PC at that time, but the positive end result is that when the PC designers finally started work on the encyclopedia, they were forced to come up with solutions that emulated Mac-like graphics features on the PC, solutions which inevitably expanded the capabilities of the PC and brought it closer to the Mac graphics benchmark.2: Software tools such as Merismus and SPAM were not fully available when the project started.Positive result: This may be the largest contributor for the project's slipped schedule, but the benefit of developing the tools concurrently with the application is that the development of tool features is driven by the immediate needs of the innovative application. Otherwise, the Merismus and SPAM tools would probably have been developed looking backwards to the Encarta project, as in "gee, Encarta would have been a lot easier to do with this tool." Instead, motivated by the needs of Explorapedia, the new tools were driven towards making succeeding generations of software easier to develop, rather than preceding generations.Applying this to my field, hardware development, it illustrates the value of starting a project even if, in the beginning, it does not appear to be feasible within the current state of the art. After all, somebody has to define the state of the art; it might as well be your project. And the shape of a new tool cannot be defined until you know the size and shape of the problem it must solve. Also, as with Mac graphics on a PC, it helps to have a target to shoot for, and the knowledge that it's been done before.To be critical of this book, I would say that a lot of Moody's focus is on communication conflicts: the analytical developers don't value the artistic designers, the women don't manage conflict like the men do, the permanent employees dismiss the contract workers. Another author, Deborah Tannen, has covered this ground with more insight, and Moody's descriptions of conflict between individuals are much easier to understand when reviewed from Tannen's point of view. For the most part, Moody settles for a gossipy telling of all the dirt that went on between people, with little revelation for what caused the conflicts, how they might have been avoided, and why the project succeeded in spite of those challenges. In the end, his revelation is that the project teams are deliberately given impossible goals by Bill Gates, with the intent that every team member, perceiving his last project to be a failure, goes on to other projects with the idea that they must work extra hard to overcome the stigma of that last failure. I doubt that even Bill Gates is that Machiavellian.

I just started my keto diet. There are incredible recipes in this cookbook. It is easy enough to cook any dish if you follow the instructions. It is written in detail about what kind of food you should eat and what kind of food you should avoid. It is also good that the ketogenic diet is well combined with intermittent fasting. It gives a good result.

I picked this one up. So, I was happily surprised to find that there's a lot of good stuff in this book! Not only that, but there were some new, interesting, and innovative recipes that I was super excited to try. Beef wraps spiced with cumin turned out delicious.
